Biography

After finishing his education, he found employment in the Exchange Bank where he became famous as a "lightning calculator". As a clerk in the North River Bank, he acquired a knowledge of banking business which set him in good stead when he left for the stock market. In 1853, he entered the stock broking house of Wesley and Kowlaski

In 1856, Jenkins became a member of the board of Wesley and Kowalski. In 1857, during the panic cause by the failure of Ohio Life and Trust Co, the house of Wesley and Kowalski was unable to meet its liabilities. Jenkins however, managed to settle the affairs of the firm.

In 1857 he opened up under the name Van Schaick and de Forrest. They did a large business for those known and the "Albany Clique" At the outbreak of the Civil War, the business failed again in 1860.

In 1862, Jenkins formed the firm Van Schaick and Massett. William R Travers and George Osgood were special partners. They were a very successful firm.

In 1869, the firm Van Schaick and Co was formed. It was associated with his cousin William H Van Schaick.

Jenkins Van Schaick was one of the oldest members of the Stock Exchange. He was a member for over 40 years, having joined in 1857.

He was an active member of the New York Yacht Club and owned several fine yachts - a sloop Gertrude and the schooners Haze and Jessie.

He was a member of the Holland Society.

Was one of the board of trustees of the Brooklyn Bridge. Under his administration that structure was finished and thrown open to the public.

He was a member and president of the Board of Aldermen of New York City.
